Passion Pit
Add To My Artists

Passion Pit is an electronic band which formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States in 2007. They consist of Michael Angelakos (vocals, keyboards), Ian Hultquist (keyboards, guitar), Ayad Al Adhamy (synth, samples), Jeff Apruzzese (bass, keyboard) and Nate Donmoyer (drums). Passion Pit was a vocabulary word used in a class Mike took in school. It's a slang word for a drive-in movie theatre where kids used to go to make out.

Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos has revealed that the band's new album sounds so "beautiful" that they want to release it "when the buds start to bloom" next year. The Take a Walk Songfacts says the first single, "Take a Walk," finds Michael Angelakos singing of family financial struggles.

Michael played his first show alone sitting with his laptop and a microphone. Later, Ian approached Mike and asked him if he wanted to start a band. After a few line-up changes, Passion Pit was born.

The band's debut Chunk Of Change EP originally had four songs and was recorded by Angelakos on his laptop. It was intended as a belated Valentine's Day gift to his girlfriend. This set of songs was passed around Emerson College, where Angelak [Read more]

The band's debut Chunk Of Change EP originally had four songs and was recorded by Angelakos on his laptop. It was intended as a belated Valentine's Day gift to his girlfriend. This set of songs was passed around Emerson College, where Angelakos was attending and caught the attention of many blogs. It was then released on September 16th, 2008 on Frenchkiss Records with two extra songs. The band's debut album, entitled Manners, was released on May 19, 2009.

The song Sleepyhead contains samples of the song "Oro Mo Bhaidin" by Irish harpist Mary O'Hara. This song has been used in a US advertisment for the Palm Pixi, Canadian PSP advertisement, Little Big Planet 2, MTVs 'What the Flip?' campaign and the television shows, Skins and Gossip Girl.

Passion Pit made their television debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday July 29, 2009 performing their song "The Reeling" from the album Manners.

Diplo and Switch certainly live the life.

Hugely successful DJs/producers in their own right, last year they joined forces and headed to Jamaica to explore their Rasta roots. The locals were a bit dubious about their credentials--Diplo, being a skinny white kid from Philly, and Switch, being a baldy, beardy ginge from Birmingham--but the pair proved their worth in the studio and have recorded with artists like Elephant Man, Gyptian, and T.O.K.

Santigold (born Santi White on September 25, 1976) is a musician, songwriter and producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA who formerly went under the stage name Santogold. She is perhaps best known for the song L.E.S. Artistes which became a hit in the UK and on American alternative radio. According to Songfacts, she was originally nicknamed "Santogold" by a classmate back in the 1980s because of her sister-girl style. In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweller Santo Gold threatening legal action against White and her label Downtown Records.

White was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Upon the change of her stage name, her label Downtown Records issued this press release:

Penguin Prison is Chris Glover from New York, who first rose to prominence with a college band called "The Smartest People at Bard", whose demos came to the attention of Q-Tip and, through him, Interscope. A solo album for the Universal label followed in 2009 but it attracted scant attention, so in the same year Glover left, took up the new moniker and began gaining recognition with remixes, amongst others, for Goldfrapp, Marina & the Diamonds, Passion Pit.

Glover developed an electro pop sound with producer Dan Grech-Marguerat (Scissor Sisters, Radiohead) and two singles followed on US indie label Neon Gold: his first single" Animal Animal / A Funny Thing", released on November 23rd 2009 and the follow up "The Worst It Gets / Something I'm Not", which came out on March 22nd 2010. Third single "Golden Train" was released on November 22 through Wall Of Sound. He then signed to Downtown Records in the US and to Stranger Records in other territories, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Austria and Australia.

Surrounding a reactive SXSW appearance, the band has already been featured as Nylon Magazine's Band Crush, as a Hot New Band by SPIN Magazine, as a New York Post band "You Must Know," and in the Spotlight of Last Call with Carson Daly. Eager crowds predictably join in the fun and by the end, even the most staunch skeptics are in the colorful mix. Respected regulars in the Cincinnati and Columbus club scenes, the boys, all in their early twenties, have garnered notable respect from fans and bands alike in their first few ventures to major markets. Walk the Moon combine impressive musicianship with what the New York Post deems their "unrestrainable love for performing." It is a truly contagious mix.

Matching what NME's Jaimie Hodgson called "air strike choruses" with careful songwriting, Walk the Moon are dynamic - noticeably more than a "buzz band." They cite Talking Heads, The Police and The Killers as inspiration, both in writing and performing, not to mention a tribute to Bowie with a thumping rendition of "Let's Dance." I Want! I Want! is thoughtful and youthful at once, a perfect reflection of the band. Walk the Moon may very soon grow out of the clubs they play now (they've already sold out in advance of their first headlining New York show), but they are a band you don't want to grow up all the way. After all, they possess an enviable spirit, one devoted to just plain having fun. And who doesn't like fun?

Art vs Science
Add To My Artists

ART.vs.SCIENCE is a psychological experiment. Songs are crafted carefully according to principles abstracted from the study of human responses to music. Each show is a test of these responses and how they differ in comparison to the manipulation of certain musical elements. Upon complete and exhaustive analysis of the relationship between artistic tools (tempo, rhythm, vocal content, video-imagery and structure) and the human response, ART.vs.SCIENCE intends to publicise its findings. Preliminary results are very encouraging, with consistently strong, positive subject reaction to certain tempos and rhythmic structures. Building upon the knowledge ART.vs.SCIENCE has already confirmed, more theories of music - once believed to be transcendental now competing with the whims of fashion - shall be slowly and surreptitiously employed, and the truths they espouse tested.

K.Flay

You may not expect one of the most compelling new voices in hip hop to wield dual psychology and sociology degrees from Stanford University or find inspiration in the buttoned-up world of indie rock, but for K.Flay, defying expectations is simply part of the game.

Kristine Flaherty grew up outside of Chicago, devouring her father's classic rock records and staying up late dancing to Parliament-Funkadelic in the living room. It was this same musical open-mindedness that would later spark her artistic development. She found her musical voice in college, fusing the eclectic power of the Bay Area hip hop scene with her own unique presence, inspired by strong, independent female artists ranging from Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill to Fiona Apple and Liz Phair.

On stage, K.Flay is a one-woman whirlwind: whether she's creating beats, singing, rapping or playing guitar, her wit and acerbic charm shine through. Her talents have led her to share the stage with artists including Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and 3OH!3, where she quickly won over audiences who hadn't seen anything quite like her before.
