The Loud Objects set sail for a feral reimagination of circuit bending. Loftily wielding soldering irons against a ramshackle overhead projector, these heroic lads from New York City (Tristan Perich the composer, Kunal Gupta the programmer, and Katie Shima the architect) wire up live musical circuits and gerrymander lo-fi electronic noise. The first few minutes are characterized by bleak silence as the loud objects swiftly assemble an initial circuit; thereafter a lush and percussive poetry overwhelms the arena as the trio heroically hacks microchips into a beastly swarm of 1-bit noise. These maneuverings are projected physically from the smokiness, hulking beyond the performers, gargantuan spectres stripped from the pillars of antiquated technology to their lurid and noble spirit.

The Loud Objects first performed as Columbia University undergraduates in 2005, and have since seanced in Germany, Japan, Italy (Screen Music 2), Norway (Piksel), across the USA (including NIME and Blip), and yearly at the Bent Festival. They have lead workshops at Columbia's Computer Music Center and Colorado College.

Tristan Perich is a composer, programmer, and electrophysical artist with a history in New York and Providence, a graduate of the ITP program at NYU after studying computer science, music, and math at Columbia University. His other works include 1-Bit Music (says Aquarius, "sounds like someone is in there pulling your speakers apart with rusty blunted shears") and machine drawings, and he has spoken twice at Dorkbot in NYC.

Kunal Gupta is a musician, programmer, and rapper with a history in New York, Providence, and Japan, a current student of the ITP program at NYU, after studying computer science and music at Columbia University. He's currently developing an online live hip hop campaign for Obama's candidacy starring MC Hammer called "Rap for Change."

Katie Shima is an architect with a history in New York and Los Angeles, a current student of the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture with interests in green building and sustainability.

There are two bands and an improv group called The Beets.

1. The Beets are a garage rock/psychedelic band from Jackson Heights, NY. Lots of reverb, minimalistic drumming, some backwoods vibes, and shouted vocals sung by all three band members. Similar to Thee Oh Sees. They recently released their debut, Spit In The Face Of People Who Don't Want To Be Cool, which was limited to 200 hand-painted copies, on Blank Dogs' label Captured Tracks.

2. The Beets are a fictional band created for Nickelodeon's early 90's TV show, Doug.

Despite the fictional band having four songs known at most, it is not unusual for "beetniks" to experience strong feelings of nostalgia when playing through these tracks which most likely hit the net through popular music downloading agents such as Kazaa, Limewire, and Napster in the late 90's - early 2000's.

The fictional group is composed of the characters Monroe Yoder, Wendy Nespot, Flounder, and Chap Lipman.

3. In reality there is also a Brooklyn improv duo that goes by the same name. This unit is comprised of John Dalessi (Dirty Churches) on keyboards, 4-track with cassettes, electronics, and cymbal and Adam Kriney (La Otracina/Owl Sounds) on drums/percussion, electric bass and electronics.

Sleepy Doug Shaw moved to NYC in 2003 at the age of 19 and began playing shows around the city. He formed among natives later that year with Hisham Haroocha (Black Dice/Soft Circle) and Abby Portner (Rings) before joining the band White Magic in 2005.

Shaw adopted the Highlife moniker in late 2007 in an attempy to "imbue a feeling of rejoicing and high consciousness", while also giving a nod to the genre of african music 'Highlife', which has greatly influenced his guitar style.

In 2008 Shaw relocated to the small island of Gaspar Grande off the coast of Trinidad with Mira Billotte of White Magic to begin working on the first batch of songs to be released under the Highlife moniker with a portable recording setup.

In late 2008, Shaw again relocated to his hometown of London England, utilizing Harvey Birrel at Southern Studios (Crass, Sir Richard Bishop, Buzzcocks) to continue work on the songs. Shaw also brought in Tim Koh (Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffitti) and Jesse Lee (Gang Gang Dance) to provide bass and drums to the recordings.

In early 2009 Shaw self released F Kenya RIP via the Internet. The track garnered glowing praise from Pitchfork, Gorillia Vs Bear, Spin Magazine, NME, BBC and Hipster runoff. It also appeared on a number of Best of 2009 lists. Highlife began playing live in the UK, eventually touring the UK and Europe with Animal Collective, Hack and a Hacksaw and Ariel Pink.

In the summer of 2009 Highlife relocated again back to NYC and began working with the NYC indie label The Social Registry. Highlife began playing shows in NYC making multiple appearances at the 2009 CMJ music festival including a slot on an event organized by Pitchfork Media. Shaw finished his first record, a five song mini album titled "Best Bless" in late 2009

In 2010 Highlife began the year with an East Coast tour with Gang Gang Dance. In June of 2010 The Social Registry began readying 'Best Bless' for release, setting a September 2010 release. Highlife continues to perform in NYC while Shaw continues to be a member of White Magic and often plays bass in Gang Gang Dance.

The Blow is Khaela Maricich, from Portland, Oregon.

The band was a duo until Jona Bechtolt left to pursue his own project, YACHT, full time. The two had been working together as The Blow since 2004, when they recorded a limited edition EP called Poor Aim: Love Songs.


"Blow" is also the name of a Melbourne-based jazz group which Last.fm automatically scrobbles as "The Blow".

As a founding member, songwriter, instrumentalist and vocalist in Vivian Girls and drummer and occasional vocalist in Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose has been an integral part of two of the most highly acclaimed and influential groups to come out of Brooklyn's still-vital music scene in the past several years. Her solo project not only reflects the aesthetic
earmarks of both those groups, but it also reveals her as a fully-formed artist in her own right.

Ms. Rose's music is haunted by the ghosts of 60s girl group, Brill Building, and 80s and 90s noise pop in equal measure. It's a spooky, lovely sound -- Frankie's ethereal yet affectation-free voice swirling in a sea of church-like harmonies over a bed of tambourines, bells, and propulsive drumming. Recalling in spirit such groups as The Aislers Set and Black Tambourine, Frankie's music is both timeless and immediate, both deeply personal and completely universal.

Pitchfork cited her song "Where Do You Run To?" as one of the best of 2008, and now with much anticipation The legendary Slumberland Records brings Frankie's debut 7". Recorded at Marlborough Farms Studio with Gary Olson, Kyle Forrester and Crystal Stilts' J.B. Townsend.....

In 2010 she released her debut album as Frankie Rose and The Outs with backing band The Outs. In 2012 she released her follow up, "Interstellar".

AA was a post-punk band from Belgium. They released just one EP, the "Essential Entertainment" EP in 1981. In 1994 all 4 songs were re-released on the "4X4" sampler on the Antler/Subway Classix label, together with 4 tracks by De Brassers, Struggler and The Cultural Decay.
In 2009 the Brooklyn label Softspot Music re-released the EP on vinyl in an edition of 500 numbered copies.

My Teenage Stride is Jedediah Smith with Brett Whitmoyer, and a rotating cast of other musicians, such as Jenny Logan from Ribbons and Jeff Ciprioni from The Metric Mile. The group began in Brooklyn in 2004, essentially as a bedroom project for permanently wired songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Smith. As interest rose and an album was released, Smith slowly got together a proper band, though he is still the sole instrumentalist on the bulk of the band's recordings to date, with the exception of some of Ears Like Golden Bats and most of the their digital-only EP, Lesser Demons. Musically, Smith is equally indebted to the Postcard Records/c86 sound, (e.g. Josef K, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Wedding Present and Orange Juice, to name a few), the early-60s Brill Building/girl group/bubblegum sound, 70s Brian Eno, 80s Flying Nun Records artists like The Clean, Tall Dwarfs, and The Chills, and English post-punk such as Joy Division.

My Teenage Stride continues to record and perform and is currently working on its fourth full-length in the band's own small studio.

In December 2008 My Teenage Stride wrote a song for a Christmas compilation called 'An Indiecater Christmas' which was put out by Indiecater Records.

Real Estate is a band from Ridgewood, New Jersey, United States, now based in Brooklyn, N.Y. The band has roots in the Garden State and they're led by singer/guitarist Martin Courtney and feature guitarist Matthew Mondanile (the latter known to some for his work in Ducktails, Predator Vision, and The Parasails) as well as Alex Bleeker (side project: Alex Bleeker And The Freaks) on bass and Etienne Duguay (also of Predator Vision) on the drums. In 2011 Jackson Pollis replaced Etienne on drums and Jonah Maurer joined the band on keys and guitar.

Brooklyn's "psych-titans" (Village Voice) STARRING formed in 2008 featuring musicians from Pterodactyl, Skeleton$, Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, and avant-garde collective Till by Turning. The quintet (in its various formations) has rightfully earned a strong reputation for a distinct brand of relentless, churning, noise rock that stretches from kitschy prog to krautrock. Their first record "Wife of God" came out in the Summer of 2010 on Death By Audio, and their follow-up album, "I Met A Lookie-Likey," was produced by composer and Skeleton$ frontman Matt Mehlan, and is due out in 2011.

The So So Glos are a Punk influenced Rock and Roll Band from the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Two of the band members are brothers and one is a step-brother. In 2008 they co-founded the Market Hotel venue with promoter Todd P. They have toured excessively in the United States and Canada and have opened for ...Trail of Dead and The Virgins in Europe. Led by Gryphon Graham, a former Texas native (who later moved to Brooklyn, New York in August 2008), Phone Tag is an electronic-pop trio composed of drummer Bodhi Landa and multi-instrumentalist Eliza Walton. The band name, a former pseudonym Graham used for writing music, made its resurgence with the release of the group's EP, Look and Feel.

As a co-founding member of Shinkoyo records, Matt Mehlan retains the label's core ideals of collaboration, experimentation, and unpredictability with his Skeletons project. Beginning in Oberlin, Ohio as a solo act with help from an eclectic cast of collaborators (classically-trained trombonists, punk rock drummers, a junkyard boy's choir), Skeletons has now settled comfortably into its adult body, having established the full-time band The Girl-Faced Boys (Seve, Johnny, Jason, and Carson) and forming an alliance with Ghostly. In addition to appearances at the 2004 CMJ and 2005 SxSW festivals, the group has lent live support to TV On The Radio, The Unicorns, VHS Or Beta, Animal Collective, Holger Czukay (of Can), Jackie O' Motherfucker, and Twig Harper. A major US tour is planned for summer following the release of the LP Git.

"Apparently, more interesting artists have lived in Oberlin, Ohio than the tiny city has streets. Life and the Afterbirth is the best of the Oberlin-based Shinkoyo label's first three intriguing releases.

Skeletons is one man, Matt Mehlan, an Oberlin Conservatory student who has a lazy voice, an ear for arranging and a knack for penning dark, subversive lyrics. First, about that lazy, breathy voice: if impersonating the Sea and Cake's Sam Prekop is a good way to get dates, well, let's just say that Mehlan is having a very nice senior year. Like Prekop, Mehlan strains to hit unreachable high notes, but never so much that he sounds anything but laissez-faire. He also shares Prekop's tendency to let the instrumental parts of his songs guide his vocals, rather than the other way around. Like the Sea and Cake's songs, Skeletons' pieces usually seem to stroll in no particular direction, with instruments often loosely following a drum groove; Life and the Afterbirth isn't for listeners who hate when music isn't crisp and compact.

And there, finally, is where the Prekop/Sea and Cake similarities end, and where Skeletons really starts to get interesting. Life and the Afterbirth is far more lush than any Prekop project I'm aware of. Mehlan employs My Bloody Valentine-style distortion, noise, fusion-inspired Fender Rhodes doodlings, IDM-like textures and washes of ambient sound, all with such skill that it's amazing that they were all done by the same person. He's also ready with more traditional instruments, including some fine (uncredited) string and horn parts. The self-titled final track even ends with a handclap-accompanied campfire singalong.

Is it a singalong about love, or brotherhood, or campfires? No way: "Get up to the sky, get down in the ground/Get back in your mother's stomach." Mehlan's lyrics contain plenty of perverse ruminations that make the bizarre observations that surround them seem even stranger: "My friend, he drowned in his own vomit/It was Bulls versus Celtics/This is the part of the story where your first pet dies/It was Jordan versus Bird/Pass out the boxing gloves/Take all your clothes off/Let's fight about who wants to die more." Lyrics like these make the apparent placidity of much of the music on the album seem curious and subversive.

Life and the Afterbirth would benefit from more direct pop hooks, and Skeletons could surely include some without interrupting Mehlan's low-key style. That aside, Life works on many different levels: Mehlan's odd and vivid lyrics give the album a feeling of mystery that unifies its already-appealing parts. Skeletons and Shinkoyo are an artist and label to watch.
