We've been huge fans of Sharon Van Etten for a few years now, and it's been amazing and exciting to witness her steady ascent in the music world.
About three years ago we caught Van Etten at Pianos and picked up her self-released, self-titled album. Almost exactly two years ago we saw her play a magical show to a packed crowd at Zebulon. One year ago we attended her sold-out, headlining show at Bowery Ballroom.
Along the way we've picked up her 2009 Language of Stone album Because I Was in Love and her 2010 Ba Da Bing release Epic. With another year tucked away, Van Etten is now poised to release her next album, Tramp, on Jagjaguwar, and last night she and her band rocked "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" with that record's first single, "Serpents." Watch the video below.
It's inspiring to follow Van Etten's growth both musically and in popularity, as she's avoided the increasingly common pitfalls of being overexposed and overbuzzed as a flavor of the week only to face the subsequent backlash. Instead she's reached her current position via steady and solid momentum that's been fueled by her powerful music, extraordinary voice and an enthusiastic, genuine and ever-growing audience.
Van Etten will celebrate the release of Tramp, which comes out February 7, with shows at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 24 and Bowery Ballroom on February 25. See you there!
