Our must-see show for tonight is at Brooklyn's Shea Stadium. Headlining is Venom P. Stinger, a resurrected 80s/90s Australian group that originally featured Mick Turner, Jim White, Dugald McKenzie and Alan Secher-Jensen.
Between 1985 and 1996 the band released four LPs, an EP and three 7-inches, and towards the end of VPS' existence Turner and White formed another group, the awesome instrumental trio The Dirty Three, with violinist Warren Ellis.
Venom P. Stinger is a different beast than The Dirty Three. Where the Three offer contemplative, melodic and often epic instrumental tunes, VPS pounds out punk in that urgent, late-eighties way. But even in such dissonant, propulsive songs you can hear the unique seeds of texture and orchestration that eventually flowered into the Dirty Three. And in addition to being a different beast, they are also their own beast, and we definitely recommend making the trek to Shea Stadium for this rare—possible once-in-a-lifetime—chance to see them play.
McKenzie, VPS' original lead singer, sadly died of Cancer in 2004, but Tim Evans, of Coconuts and Degreaser, will fill in. This show is a warm-up of sorts for the band's big gig on May 15 at All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK, which is curated by Pavement and will also feature The Fall, Faust, The Clean, Endless Boogie and many other awesome groups.
Brooklyn's Freshkills, Violent Bullshit and Golden Error open tonight's show.
