Seattle's' These Arms are Snakes have always flown under the radar, not heavy enough enough to appeal to metal heads, not noisy enough to appeal to noise aficionados, and probably too metal to appeal to hipsters. This might have explained their criminally under-attended show last week at Brooklyn DIY venue Shea Stadium, which recently moved to a new location.
Singer Steve Snere shed his clothes methodically throughout the show and bounced around the room like a poisonous frog who had decided to lick himself. He broke a chair after jumping off of it and tore down a set of curtains. He led the band as they kicked through classics such as “The Shit Sisters” and drew heavily from their albums Tail Swallower and Dove and Easter.
We missed ¡Apeshit! but were able to catch DD/MM/YYYY and their complex, proggy hardcore. Members of the band constantly switched instruments, with each setup offering strange and unique sonic compositions. Violent Bullshit followed with their outsider's take on hardcore. The band features members of Panthers, Pink Reason and the Fiery Furnaces. They came off more as fans than purists, and singer Jayson Green gave the audience more entertaining stage banter than tunes. At one point in their set they played a song called “Seattle Fuck Off” stating that they did not intend to offend the night's headliners. Later in the evening, These Arms are Snakes addressed this, with Snere calling bullshit on Bullshit, pointing out the fact that the members of VBS were most likely just “New York transplants,” an honest example of Sneres' greatly entertaining lack of inhibition.
