Review: North Highlands, The Beets and Dry Feet on a boat for Nachos NY's Guac Rock Cruise

North Highlands

Last night it was high seas ahead, as North Highlands, The Beets, Dry Feet and admirers embarked on a booze cruise aboard The Jewel. Gliding across the East River for Nachos NY's Guac Rock Cruise, the night was overflowing with drinks, several interesting, if not scary, varieties of guacamole (can you say beets and tequila?) and, of course, tunes.

Donning their surf-inspired tie-dye best, Dry Feet was first up on the boat’s makeshift stage. And while they only played a few songs, their banter with the understandably distracted, lined-up-at-the-bar crowd, was quite funny. In between sets, a dancing DJ dug up various hip-hop hits and golden oldies to keep the faux-mustache-sporting indie crowd occupied, which caused some to shake it and others to sing along.

The Beets were next to hit the tip-of-the-boat stage, which they decorated with colorful DIY fabric posters and orchestrated light changes. Playing their ’60’s inspired surf-punk jams, the three Jackson Heights, New York natives finally got the boat rocking, both literally and figuratively. Appropriately covering the 1962 sensation “The Loco-Motion,” as well as playing some killer tracks of their own, including the infectiously distorted “I Think I Might’ve Built A Horse,” this threesome are definitely ones to watch.

With the night almost coming to a close, North Highlands finally took to the stage, and boy did they exceed every expectation. Drawing in most of the concertgoers from the top deck and the tiny two-manned bar, the Brooklyn five-pieces’ swoon-worthy tunes filled the boat. Opening with the sweet, sway-inducing track “Collar Bones” and the melodiously beautiful, yet highly addictive “Sugar Lips,” the band put on a show in wondrous, fun-filled style. Enlivening the crowd during their anthemic “Here’s To You,” and presenting two brand new songs— due out in the next month or so—they jumped to the beat of their fellow passengers’ delirious (and slightly tipsy) hearts.
