Monday night we headed over to Death By Audio's Maze installation to see what it was like and check out some live tunes. The Maze, also known as You Are Here, takes up all of DBA and makes for an unique performance environment. Musical acts set up in a number of available spaces throughout the labyrinth, and the audience peeks around corners and over walls to take in the sights and sounds.
After arriving and wandering our way into the depths of the maze, we found Love Like Deloreans letting loose some synth-centric atmospheres. Minimal drum machine beats carried there tunes along at a steady but not too insistent pace.
After Love Like Deloreans, Pepi Ginsberg and her band took the stage at the other side of the maze. Pepi's songs and voice were both great, and her band was just as impressive. We're looking forward to catching her again soon. She'll be playing at Zebulon on October 13 and Union Hall on October 23.
Last up were Sam Mickens (of The Dead Science and eponymous Ecstatic Showband and Revue) and drummer Mike Pride. The duo laid down a free-jazz set that was as intricate and intriguing as the corridors in which it was performed. A great way to end the evening.
