With plans of venue hopping dashed last Friday night, thanks to overcapacity at Northside’s Woodsist Showcase, we had only one option: to go back to the venue from which we came. In this case, that venue was Public Assembly, which is not only conveniently located a few steps from the overcrowded Music Hall of Williamsburg, but thankfully also housed one of two Pop Tarts Suck Toasted (R.I.P.) farewell showcases, which provided an insane lineup full of incredible performances.
The five New York-stationed boys that make up MiniBoone put on a ridiculous (in a good way!) set. From the moment the energetic troupe picked up their instruments they began to rock out, jumping around and scream-singing their sometimes theatrical, sometimes punk-pop, but always catchy tunes. Performing a lively, jump-inducing rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," offering up CDs to the audience and having an incredible energy about them, this unique quintet is definitely a band to catch live. MiniBoone plays again at Bruar Falls this Wednesday and they'll be doing a Rocks Off Concert Cruise on July 20.
Dinosaur Feathers followed, keeping the merriment alive with intricate melodies, mellow dual harmonies and sway dancing. Turning out jams that combine elements of mellifluous surf rock and experimental pop, this three-piece is also a must-see this summer. And luckily, with a few upcoming shows, you can dance along with Dinosaur Feathers several times this summer. They play Brooklyn Bowl tomorrow, Union Hall on July 7, Mercury Lounge on July 8 and Pier 54 on July 22.
Bountiful energy is the first thing one notices about The Grates. Sure, these Aussies put on a killer set and have some truly amazing songs, but front gal Patience Hodgson’s neverending excitement is amazing. Jumping around, dancing all over the stage and hopping into the audience to dance and sing with the crowd, Hodgson is a spirited performer who likes to connect with her audience. If you missed The Grates during Northside, definitely try to catch them when they play the Mercury Lounge on July 9, but drinking a few cups of coffee beforehand is a must.
