Tonight you can see three of L Magazine's "8 NYC Bands That You Need To Hear," Miniboone, Ava Luna and Ball of Flame Shoot Fire, at Cake Shop.
We wrote about MiniBoone before—they put out a pretty fine EP, Big Changes, at the end of January. Ava Luna has received a lot of well-deserved attention recently as well, including coverage from the Village Voice and Earfarm.com.
Here's a quote from Christopher Weingarten's Voice piece on the band:
"Brooklyn's Ava Luna is the rare band that needs to be heard to be believed. In the band's hazy, floaty, post-TVOTR-maybe conceit, post-punk grooves, soaring soul harmonies, and classic indie detachment join forces for something beautiful, infectious, and damn-near indescribable."
And here's a bit of what L Magazine said about Ball of Flame Shoot Fire:
Ball of Flame, as we will hereby forever call them, make songs that sound slightly familiar but mostly strange, as if the weirdo-voiced trifecta of Dan Bejar, Spencer Krug and Carey Mercer flopped between fronting a vaudeville troupe and Animal Collective—also a prog-rock band and a circus.
