Tonight you have the chance to catch two terrific folk songstresses in Brooklyn. Boston's Marissa Nadler and Philadelphia's Meg Baird team up for a show at Littlefield.
Marissa Nadler has a silky, soothing voice and a floating, dreamy songwriting style to match. She's put Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Annabelle Lee" to music and released four full-length albums, all critically acclaimed. Her latest, 2009's Little Hells, came out on Kemado Records.
Meg Baird can often be found playing in Philly psych folk band Espers, as well as with her sister Laura as the Baird Sisters, but she's also done some great solo work. We couldn't stop spinning her debut solo LP Dear Companion when it came out on Drag City back in 2007, and we still give it a spin pretty regularly. Baird's tunes reach back into the Appalachian and British folk traditions, and her strong and clear voice lets her pull off those styles perfectly. She recorded a Daytrotter session last month, and you can listen to it here.
