There's a one-of-a-kind, not-to-miss event going on this Saturday, November 7, so make sure you've cleared your schedule for the evening. Multiverse Playground is a multimedia art and music extravaganza taking place at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, and Eardrum NYC is very excited to be one of its sponsors. We caught up with artist Larry Mayorga to talk about his contribution to the night, a light display that will accompany music by Paper Garden Records bands Emanuel & the Fear, Darla Farmer (both of whom we saw at Pianos last month) and Peasant.
Mayorga originally helped out at a Paper Garden concert in Washington, DC, and, hearing the label's bands, he decided he wanted to work with them more. "I wanted to start getting involved with the label some way somehow," he says. Speaking with the label, he soon found that they were also very excited to collaborate. "I had been looking for a good opportunity to create a more structural and artistic work and to collaborate on a music show with bold, bright lighting work," he says. "I've been more specialized as a graphic designer and art director with a visual arts background, and this is a result of the combination of all these creative forces."
How would Mayorga describe his light display? "It's pretty straight forward," he says. "It takes advantage of the potential of light to create very graphic and colorful pieces, elevating the meaning of light and design to create landscapes and ephemeral new spaces." It's really something that beckons for an audience, he emphasizes. "Since this is a new work, the real and final shape of it is based on the response of the views, so I am looking forward to seeing the reaction of people as they become involved with the atmosphere," he explains.
"Our motto is: let's create something unique, in a unique space, for unique people," says Mayorga. "And that's exactly what this is."
Check out Mayorga's unique interactive light display for yourself, along with much more music and art goodness, this Saturday at 3rd Ward. In addition to Mayorga, Multiverse Playground will also feature music Boy Crisis, Das Racist, Emanuel & the Fear, Emanuel & the Fear and Peasant, as well as art from Heidi Greenwood and Art Battles and comedy from Kurt Metzger.
