Video: Jonny Corndawg - See him tonight at Pianos, tomorrow night at Knitting Factory

Jonny Corndawg

There is no one else like Jonny Corndawg. Growing up in rural Virginia, he's been touring on his motorcycle and singing his country tunes everywhere he goes since dropping out of school in 2001. He's been to Canada, Europe, India, Australia and Argentina. He makes one-of-a-kind airbrushed t-shirts. He's done some beautiful leather work. He's played with D. Charles Speer at Issue Project Room and he'll open for David Allen Coe at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in June. He's also done a Daytrotter session.

Tonight you can see him at Pianos with Jennings, Mingus Murray opening and Spirit Family Reunion playing afterward.

Tomorrow he'll be at the Knitting Factory with Tim Barry and Red Clay River.

We've seen Jonny perform and we wholeheartedly recommend the experience. His songs are funny and freewheeling, but at the same time sincere and authentic. He's based out of Nashville now, and his tunes seem to draw from the essence of that city's musical spirit—not that pop country crap, but the deeper tradition of country practiced by icons such as Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. There's an incredible ease to Jonny's music, making it sound like something that should be sung on the back porch of a farmhouse with one's feet propped up. His songs, though, go deeper than that, tapping into the current of America and putting it on display without any pretension.
