Saturday we headed to Bowery Ballroom to catch Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit, Caitlin Rose and James Mathe.
We've been big fans of Rose since first hearing her terrific cover of the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers," and it was great to see the songs from her debut LP, Own Side Now, backed by a superb live band. We hadn't experienced Flynn and his tunes before, but he and the Wit were impressive, delivering a modern take on English folk rock. James Mathe, who backed Flynn on keys, opened the show with a batch of his own songs, and though we only caught the end of his set, what we did hear sounded good.
