One of the first CMJ events that we're psyched to check out is the Stereogum/Believer Magazine Showcase at the Studio at Webster Hall on Tuesday. The headliner is Cold Cave, who let us down a bit when we saw them open for Faust a couple weeks ago. But we're going to give them the benefit of the doubt and see what they can do when they're the main act. After all, we do love their Matador debut, Love Comes Close.
Before Cold Cave, NYC dance duo The Golden Filter will lay down some hefty and melodic beats to get your booty shaking. If you haven't heard them, think DFA-style electro dance tunes with airy, crisp female vocals. Their first single, 2008's "Solid Gold," is indeed solid and precious.
Speaking of DFA, the label's fairly recent signee Free Energy will play right before The Golden Filter. Free Energy offers a much less DFA-like sound. They're a pretty straight up rock band hailing from Philadelphia, employing laid-back delivery with classic pop hooks.
Starting off the night is Glasser, featuring Ms. Cameron Mesirow and Foreign Born's Matt Popieluch. Mesirow recorded her Apply EP using Apple's GarageBand, but the music's dreamy, organic atmosphere doesn't at all hint at that simple approach. We're excited to see how these fragile and beautiful songs come across live.
So there you have it. A solid four-band bill that'll be the perfect way to kick off your extended CMJ weekend. Go forth and enjoy!
